In a strategic move to enhance energy security, reduce dependence on petroleum imports, and promote cleaner fuel usage, the Indian government has recently lifted all restrictions on ethanol production from sugarcane juice, sugar syrup, and molasses for the 2025-26 ethanol supply year. This policy shift underlines India’s commitment to achieving 20 per cent ethanol blending in petrol (E20) by 2025, with prospects of further expansion to 30 per cent in the coming years.
Understanding E20 Fuel
E20 fuel is a gasoline blend consisting of 20 per cent ethanol and 80 per cent conventional petrol. Ethanol, a renewable biofuel, is primarily derived from sugarcane-based sources such as juice, syrup, or molasses. Integrating ethanol into petrol offers multiple benefits: it reduces India’s reliance on imported crude oil, lowers greenhouse gas emissions, and provides a stable market for sugarcane farmers, thereby supporting the agricultural sector.
Environmental Benefits of E20 Fuel
One of the primary advantages of E20 fuel is its positive environmental impact. Ethanol combustion produces fewer harmful emissions compared to pure petrol, contributing to cleaner air in urban areas. By substituting a portion of petrol with biofuel, India aims to reduce its carbon footprint while simultaneously promoting sustainable energy practices. While E20 has a slightly lower energy density than petrol, which can lead to minor mileage reductions, the trade-off is considered worthwhile for long-term environmental gains.
Vehicle Compatibility and Safety Concerns
Vehicle compatibility remains a critical consideration for the successful adoption of E20 fuel. Modern vehicles manufactured after April 2023 are generally designed with E20-compatible components. Leading automobile companies, such as Hero MotoCorp, have incorporated ethanol-resistant materials in fuel tanks, pipes, and engine parts, ensuring safe performance.
However, older vehicles that are not designed for ethanol blends may experience significant issues. Ethanol is corrosive and absorbs moisture, which can damage metal components such as fuel tanks, pipes, and injectors. It can also degrade rubber and plastic elements like seals, gaskets, and fuel hoses. Moreover, if engines are not calibrated for E20 fuel, problems such as poor combustion, engine knocking, reduced performance, and difficult cold starts may arise. Industry experts strongly advise that E20 use in non-compatible vehicles could lead to costly repairs and operational challenges.
Impact on Mileage
E20 fuel can slightly affect vehicle mileage due to ethanol’s lower energy content. According to the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, four-wheelers designed for E10 fuel but calibrated for E20 experience 1-2 per cent reduction in fuel efficiency, whereas other vehicles may see 3-6 per cent decrease. With proper engine tuning and use of E20-compatible materials, these efficiency drops can be minimized. Major automobile manufacturers have already started implementing these technologies in newer vehicle models, easing the transition to higher ethanol blends.
India’s Ethanol Supply and Production Capacity
The government’s decision to lift ethanol production restrictions directly addresses previous supply limitations. During the 2023-24 ethanol supply year, availability was constrained due to reduced sugarcane output. However, the current policy allows sugar mills and distilleries to produce ethanol without quantitative limits, significantly boosting production potential.
Favourable monsoon conditions are expected to enhance sugarcane yields, further strengthening India’s ethanol supply chain. With these measures, the country is well-positioned to meet the 20 per cent blending target by 2025 and even explore expansion to 30 per cent in the future.
