ITR Deadline Extended to November 21: Who Gets More Time to File?

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has extended the deadline for filing Income Tax Returns (ITR) for certain taxpayers for Assessment Year (AY) 2026-27.

The ITR filing deadline has been moved from October 31, 2026 to November 21, 2026. However, this extension is not for all taxpayers.

Who Gets the Extension?

The extended deadline applies to taxpayers whose accounts are required to be audited under the Income-tax Act, 1961.

This mainly covers certain businesses, professionals and other taxpayers who fall under the tax-audit provisions.

So, if your accounts are not subject to tax audit, this November 21 extension does not automatically apply to you.

Tax Audit Deadline Also Extended

CBDT has also extended the deadline for furnishing the tax audit report.

The audit report deadline has been moved from:

September 30, 2026 → October 21, 2026

After completing the audit, eligible taxpayers will now have until November 21, 2026 to file their ITR.

Why Was the Deadline Extended?

The extension gives taxpayers and tax professionals additional time to complete the audit, prepare financial information and meet the related filing requirements.

The government announced the change through CBDT Circular No. 07/2026 dated September 28, 2026.

Revised Deadlines at a Glance

Tax Audit Report: October 21, 2026

ITR for eligible tax-audit cases: November 21, 2026

Earlier ITR deadline: October 31, 2026

Earlier audit deadline: September 30, 2026

What Should Taxpayers Do?

If your accounts are covered by tax audit, use the additional time to:

  • Complete your tax audit

  • Check financial statements and income details

  • Reconcile TDS and other tax information

  • Review deductions and claims

  • Verify your ITR before submitting it

  • Complete e-verification after filing

Bottom Line

The ITR deadline has been extended to November 21, 2026, but only for taxpayers covered by the specified tax-audit category.

If you are not required to get your accounts audited, don't assume that the November 21 deadline applies to you. Check your applicable ITR due date before waiting to file.
