Rs 10 Crore WhatsApp Scam Exposed

In a shocking case of online fraud, a group of young people aged around 27 to 28 cheated innocent individuals out of more than Rs 10 crore in just one month. This scam took place mainly through WhatsApp, showing how dangerous it can be to trust strangers on social media.

How the Scam Started

It all began with a young woman named Sakshi Yadav. She reached out to people on WhatsApp and started friendly conversations. Without ever meeting in person, she used her charm and tricks to build trust with her victims.

One victim from Delhi was introduced by Sakshi to a WhatsApp group named ‘eToro Analytical Team & Time is Money’. She claimed the group was run by her uncle and a man named Rakesh. Inside the group, fake pictures and screenshots were shared, showing huge profits earned from trading stocks. There were also stories about how these fake investors had suddenly become very rich.

Victims were first asked to invest small amounts of money. To make the scheme believable, some victims were shown fake profits or given partial refunds. This made the victims believe the scheme was genuine.

After gaining their confidence, the scammers asked the victims to invest larger sums.

When the Scam Unfolded

Once people invested large amounts, the scammers started making excuses. They said the investors’ accounts were frozen due to tax issues or that the investments were suffering losses. Then, all communication stopped. The scammers disappeared without returning the money.

One victim from Delhi lost Rs 8.15 lakh before realizing he had been cheated. He filed a police complaint.

Police Investigation and Arrests

The police investigated the case and found that the scam involved many people. The scammers used several bank accounts to receive and transfer money. Some of these bank accounts belonged to innocent people who were paid to let the scammers use their accounts. This is known as “money mule” fraud and is illegal.

The money was transferred from a Canara Bank account in Andhra Pradesh to an Axis Bank account in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, held by a man named Shashi Pratap Singh and his father.

Police arrested Shashi, who admitted to traveling to Nepal with an associate, Nihal Pandey, to carry out the scam. Both were arrested, and their involvement helped uncover more details of the fraud network operating across borders.

Important Lessons for Everyone

This scam teaches us some very important lessons to protect ourselves in the digital world:

  1. Always Verify Before Investing: Don’t trust strangers who approach you with investment offers on WhatsApp or social media. Check their identity and credentials carefully.
  2. Take Your Time: Scammers want you to act fast. Always take your time to think, research, and consult trusted friends or financial advisors before investing.
  3. Be Wary of Unrealistic Promises: If someone promises you very high profits with little or no risk, it is most likely a scam.
  4. Never Share Your Bank Details or Allow Others to Use Your Account: Lending your bank account or sharing details can make you a part of illegal activities and get you into trouble.
  5. Report Suspicious Activities: If you suspect fraud, immediately report it to the police and your bank. Quick reporting can help catch scammers and protect others.
  6. Use Only Registered and Regulated Investment Platforms: Always invest through official channels like registered stock brokers or banks, which follow government rules and offer more security.

Conclusion

This Rs 10 crore scam is a harsh reminder of how quickly scammers can exploit trust online. With increasing digital use, it is vital to stay cautious and informed. Never rush into investments based on promises made over WhatsApp or social media. Careful verification, patience, and awareness are your best tools to stay safe from such frauds.
