These rules took effect on the date stated and are now in force. Treat the article as a checklist rather than an advance notice.
- If your account was frozen for incomplete KYC, re-KYC can be completed at the branch or through the bank's digital channels.
- Bank KYC status is separate from your PAN status; a PAN that was not linked to Aadhaar by 31 December 2025 became inoperative from 1 January 2026 and must be regularised separately.
The State Bank of India (SBI), the country’s largest public sector bank, has issued an important notice for all its customers regarding account activation, withdrawal limits, and KYC compliance. Starting October 31, 2025, SBI will implement new rules that could affect millions of customers across India.
These updates aim to enhance account security, curb fraudulent transactions, and ensure compliance with RBI guidelines. However, customers who fail to follow these changes on time may face account deactivation or restrictions on services.
Why These Rules Matter
SBI has observed that a large number of bank accounts remain inactive for long periods or lack updated personal details such as Aadhaar, PAN, or passport information. To strengthen the safety of customers’ funds and reduce risks of misuse, the bank has introduced stricter compliance measures.
Inactive accounts or those with incomplete KYC details will now face higher scrutiny — and possibly temporary blockage — if not updated by the deadline.
New Cash Withdrawal Limits
Alongside the compliance update, SBI is also revising daily ATM withdrawal limits for its debit card users:
- Classic & Maestro Cards: ₹20,000 per day
- Gold Cards: ₹50,000 per day
- Platinum Cards: ₹1,00,000 per day
This limit will apply uniformly from October 31, 2025, across all SBI ATMs and partner networks. The move is designed to promote digital transactions while maintaining security over cash withdrawals.
KYC Non-Compliance Could Lead to Account Closure
In line with RBI’s strict KYC guidelines, any bank account that does not have updated verification details could be frozen or closed.
To ensure smooth operations, SBI urges customers to:
- Update personal details such as Aadhaar, PAN, passport, and contact information at the nearest branch or through online banking.
- Perform at least one transaction regularly — even a small deposit or fund transfer can keep your account active.
- Avoid responding to fraudulent messages or calls seeking confidential information.
- Visit the bank if you have an ongoing loan, overdraft facility, or special service linked to your account.
- Monitor your SMS and email alerts for any communication from SBI.
Pro Tip for Customers
If you use SBI’s YONO app, you can not only update your details but also file your Income Tax Return for free before the October 31 deadline. Staying compliant and digitally active helps you avoid last-minute hassles and ensures uninterrupted banking access.
Why SBI Took This Step
Cybersecurity threats, fraudulent account misuse, and dormant accounts have become key challenges for banks in recent years. With these new rules, SBI aims to:
- Protect customer funds from unauthorized access.
- Strengthen internal monitoring against suspicious transactions.
- Comply with RBI’s data accuracy and KYC standards.
Final Reminder
If your account has been inactive or your KYC is not updated, act now. Visit your nearest SBI branch, update your details online, or verify them through the YONO app to avoid account blockage after October 31, 2025.
Banking security is not just the bank’s responsibility — it’s yours too.
