When to apply for PAN or TAN separately
Apply separately if you
- run a proprietorship, partnership firm, trust, society or HUF that needs its own identifier
- have started deducting or collecting tax at source and do not yet hold a TAN
- need a correction to name, date, address or category on an existing PAN or TAN
- have lost the card and need a reprint or an e-copy
- are an individual or non-resident who needs a PAN for a specific transaction or filing
You may not need this engagement if you
- are incorporating a company or LLP — PAN and TAN are applied for through that process
- already hold a valid PAN and have no deduction obligation requiring a TAN
- only need to link or verify an existing PAN rather than apply for a new one
- hold a PAN in the same capacity already — a second PAN should not be applied for
If you are incorporating, do not apply separately. We will tell you when this engagement is unnecessary rather than sell you a duplicate application.
What PAN and TAN actually are
PAN is the permanent identifier the income-tax system uses to attribute income, filings, tax credits and transactions to a person or entity. TAN is a separate identifier required by anyone responsible for deducting or collecting tax at source, and it is what TDS payments, returns and certificates are filed against. They serve different functions, are applied for through different applications, and holding one has no bearing on whether you need the other.
PAN identifies the taxpayer
Returns, tax credits, high-value transactions and refunds are all mapped to PAN.
TAN identifies the deductor
Required to pay TDS, file quarterly statements and issue deduction certificates.
One PAN per person
Holding more than one PAN in the same capacity is not permitted and should be surrendered where it has happened.
Data accuracy matters
Name, category and date details drive matching across filings, so an error here propagates everywhere.
Why founders choose this structure
Filing and compliance
Income-tax returns, TDS statements and tax payments cannot be made without the correct identifier.
Banking and finance
Current accounts, loans and financial onboarding for an entity require its own PAN.
Correct tax credit
Tax deducted is credited against the PAN quoted. A wrong or missing PAN is how credit goes missing.
Avoiding higher deduction
The Act prescribes higher deduction rates where PAN is not furnished, subject to the conditions in law.
Contract and vendor onboarding
Buyers collect PAN and, where relevant, TAN as part of standard vendor documentation.
Clean records
Correcting name or category errors early prevents mismatch notices later.
Who needs PAN, who needs TAN
PAN for entities
Firms, LLPs, companies, trusts, societies, HUFs and associations require their own PAN to file returns, open accounts and be assessed.
PAN for individuals
Required where income exceeds the threshold at which a return must be filed, and where the law requires PAN to be quoted for specified transactions.
TAN for deductors
Any person responsible for deducting or collecting tax at source must obtain a TAN and quote it in TDS payments, statements and certificates.
TAN is not universal
A business with no deduction obligation does not need a TAN merely because it has a PAN. We review the obligation rather than assume it.
Incorporation route
For companies and LLPs, PAN and TAN are applied for through the incorporation process. A separate application in those cases is unnecessary.
One PAN only
A person should not hold more than one PAN in the same capacity. Where a duplicate exists, it should be surrendered.
Non-residents
Non-residents and foreign entities can apply where the law requires PAN, with document and address requirements specific to their case.
Corrections
Where the allotted record carries a wrong name, date, address or category, a change or correction application is the remedy — not a fresh PAN.
Documents you'll need
- Proof of identity of the applicant
- Proof of address of the applicant
- Proof of date of birth
- Recent photograph, where the application type requires it
- For HUF, the declaration and details of the karta
Name spelling must be consistent across documents. Mismatch is the most common cause of rejection or of a corrected record later.
From applicability check to allotment.
Processing time depends on the authorised agency and on whether documents match cleanly.
- 01Day 1
Requirement check
We establish the constitution, what triggered the requirement, and whether PAN, TAN or both are actually needed.
- 02Day 1
Category and form selection
The correct application type and applicant category are fixed — this is what most rejected applications get wrong.
- 03Day 1–2
Documentation
Identity, address and constitution documents are collected and checked for name and detail consistency.
- 04Day 2
Application submission
The application is submitted through the authorised channel with the prescribed charges, and the acknowledgement is shared with you.
- 05As required
Verification follow-up
Where the processing agency raises an objection or seeks clarification, we respond and resubmit.
- 06On processing
Allotment
The number is allotted and communicated. Physical dispatch of a card, where applicable, follows separately.
- 07On completion
Handover and next steps
You get the allotted identifier along with a note of the filings and portal registrations it now enables or requires.

Items without an explicit add-on marking are part of the standard engagement. Where PAN and TAN arise through incorporation, we route you to that engagement instead of filing a separate application.
What a PAN or TAN application costs.
This is a small, well-defined engagement. Statutory application charges are payable to the processing agency; our professional fee covers the applicability review, correct categorisation, filing and follow-up.
Professional fee

Fees are quoted in writing after a scope review. Government / statutory fees at actuals.
Professional services

Statutory application charges

Corrections
VariesChange or correction applications on an existing record, quoted separately.
Multiple applications
VariesSeveral applicants, or PAN and TAN together, quoted per application.
Bundled with other work
VariesWhere PAN or TAN arises within incorporation or a payroll or TDS setup, it is covered there rather than charged twice.
If your requirement is already covered by another engagement, we say so. We do not bill a separate application for something incorporation will deliver anyway.
PAN and TAN are not interchangeable.
| Parameter | PANTaxpayer | TANDeductor |
|---|---|---|
| What it identifies | The taxpayer | The person deducting or collecting tax |
| Who must obtain it | Persons and entities required to file or quote PAN | Persons responsible for TDS or TCS |
| Used for | Returns, tax credit, transactions, banking | TDS payments, quarterly statements, certificates |
| Quoted by | The recipient of income | The deductor |
| How many | One per person, per capacity | As required for the deductor and its branches |
| Obtained on incorporation | Yes, through the incorporation forms | Yes, through the incorporation forms |
| Consequence of not holding | Higher deduction and inability to file, as prescribed | Inability to deposit TDS and file statements, with consequences under the Act |
Holding a PAN does not discharge the requirement to obtain a TAN once you begin deducting tax at source.
After the number is allotted
What follows a PAN or TAN allotment.
Immediately
Put it on record
- Quote the PAN on invoices, contracts and vendor forms as required
- Share the identifier with your bank and payroll records
- Register on the relevant tax portals
If you obtained a TAN
Start the TDS cycle
- Deposit deductions within the prescribed timelines
- File quarterly statements
- Issue deduction certificates to deductees
Ongoing
Keep records accurate
- Correct name or address changes promptly
- Reconcile tax credit against your filings
- Surrender any duplicate PAN discovered
As you grow
Wider compliance
- Review GST registration applicability
- Set up payroll compliance where you hire
- Move to a structured annual compliance calendar
A TAN carries live obligations from the date deduction starts. Obtaining one and not filing is worse than not needing one at all.
The identifier is step one. The filings are the work.
Once PAN and TAN are in place, the same team can run your income-tax, TDS, GST and annual filings against them.

Avoid these PAN and TAN mistakes.
Applying for a second PAN
Where a PAN already exists, a fresh application creates a duplicate that must later be surrendered. A correction application is the right route.
Choosing the wrong applicant category
A firm applying under an individual category, or a trust under a company category, results in a record that will not match your filings.
Name mismatches
Spelling and initials must match the supporting document. Mismatches cause rejection now and credit-matching problems later.
Ignoring TAN until a notice arrives
The obligation begins when deduction becomes due, not when it is convenient. Late TAN means late deposit and late statements.
Applying for TAN when none is required
Businesses with no deduction obligation take a TAN and then carry an unnecessary filing exposure.
Duplicating an incorporation deliverable
Companies and LLPs receive PAN and TAN through incorporation. Paying separately for the same thing is avoidable.
Never updating the address
Communication and notices go to the recorded address. A stale record means missed correspondence.
